Lee Hope

Lee Hope is a native San Diegan and third generation Hope architect, receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the University of California at Berkeley in 1985.

Lee affiliated with the Hope Design Group, a family firm founded by his grandfather and responsible for many architectural landmarks in downtown San Diego and around the world. After an assignment in the London office where he traveled extensively seeking out European Economic Community projects in Eastern Europe and rural school projects in Portugal, Lee returned to San Diego where he eventually became President and CEO of the Group before deciding to start his own practice in 1994.

As Owner and Principal Architect, Lee provides a full service product from concept definition through construction, with each project striking a balance between the client’s desired performance criteria, available budget and aesthetic aspirations.

Because of his wide range of design in residential, multifamily and commercial projects, Lee easily adapts to diverse projects with varying styles and scope of work. Combining that versatility with his use of AutoCAD release 2003/2006 and other multi-media tools, he is able to capture precisely the quality and spirit of any given project.

An environmentally friendly architect, Lee uses locally sourced and sustainable materials whenever possible; as well as ensuring that designs are both sympathetic to and in harmony with the local environment. In February 2011, his Harbor Point commercial building received the LEED GOLD level award for its core and shell and was verified by the Green Building Certification Institute.

His comprehensive professional services include conceptual packages to complete construction documents, permit processing services, concept and color renderings and presentations, preliminary construction cost projections and analyses, and assistance in the contractor bidding process. In addition to basic services, Lee also prepares master plans and offers expert testimony.

Lee is also poised to design and construct projects in neighboring Mexico together with Enrique Ayala, a highly respected Baja California architect, with whom he has established a long working relationship.

It should also be noted that his close working relationship with the City of San Diego Development Services staff has made for the smooth and timely processing of numerous development and construction permits, a significant factor in the success of any project.

His technical talent notwithstanding, Lee considers the client to be an integral part of the process and the most important element in each project. From ground up projects, custom home site planning and development, remodels and additions to multifamily and commercial projects, Lee is personally involved and maintains a close working relationship with each client throughout all phases of a project to ensure the highest standards of design excellence and accuracy, all the while being totally responsive to the client’s needs, constraints and vision.
